Quizzes are a fantastic way to boost user engagement and increase knowledge retention. With Synap you can make quizzes directly in the platform and then add them to courses.
Create a Quiz
Navigate to the quiz editor, you can do this from the library, collection, or course pages.
From here, you will need to give your quiz a title before you can add any questions. You can also include a brief description of what the quiz will be about.
Add a Question
To add your first question to a quiz select 'Questions' from the list of menu items (1), this will take you to the question section. To add your first question, simply type your answer in the box near the top of the page (2). You can then begin to add up to 26 answers options. To change an answer to the correct option, select the 'Correct' tick box (3). All questions need at least one correct and one incorrect answer but multiple correct or incorrect answers can be added.
Select the question type, there are 5 to choose from :
1) Single correct : Multiple choice type of question, with one correct answer. Value = 1 mark
2) Multiple correct: Multiple choice type question, users must select all the correct options. Value = 1 mark
3) Ranked: Multiple choice type of question, users must exactly re order the options into the correct order. Value = 1 mark
4) Free text: Text entry is required to answer the question, the system doesn't mark these questions. If you are using Free Text questions in an exam you must set the results to deferred on the quiz configuration, as these need to be marked off platform
5) File Upload: Student must upload a Word / pdf etc file to the platform. This type of question must be marked manually
For Free Text and File Upload questions you must provide a Text Box label which goes above the Free Text / File Upload box for students
To add more questions, right-click on the 'Add question' box at the bottom of the page and repeat the process above.
Images and Feedback
Feedback: You have the option to provide feedback to anyone who takes the quiz which is useful if you need to explain the answer further. Feedback can be written in the box near the bottom of the page.
Images: Images can also be added to questions and/or feedback by selecting the image icon to upload your chosen file.
Previewing and Saving
Once you're happy with your question and possible responses click 'Save' to save any changes. You can then click the 'Preview' button to quickly take the quiz from a student perspective. This will open in a new tab.
We recommend doing this before making the quiz public to ensure everything is clear and displaying in the way you want it to.
All quizzes will be stored in the library and can be added to Collections / Courses during Collection / Course creation.
All quizzes that you create on Synap will be available in your Library. Go back into your created quizzes at any time to:
- Add questions
- Delete questions
- Changes questions
To delete a question, open it using the drop down arrow and click Delete (1). You will be prompted to confirm you want to delete before this is finalised. This will delete the question permanently along with its unique id. You can also delete answer options using the red circle / white 'x' button to the right of box containing the option (2). Edit the option by clicking the pencil.
Changes and deletions are not made permanent until you click 'Save' in the top right-hand corner
Depending on whether your quiz has Sections or not will dictate how you organise your questions. For a test without Sections just click the Organise button in the top right hand corner of the screen. You will then be able to drag and drop the questions into a different order.
For a test with Sections, click Organise Section at the bottom of the Section.
EMQs are ‘Extended Matching Questions’ they are a way to link multiple questions by a common question stem. For example, multiple questions on the same passage of text.
You can add these before or after adding your MCQs. Just click on the EMQ Groups tab in the list of options and then the 'Create an EMQ' button
You then enter the stem of the question and feedback in the same way as you do for the individual questions. Give the EMQ's a clear and unique External ID.
Click Save once you're happy, you will see that the EMQ has been given an ID
Once you've saved your EMQ, go to your MCQs. You will need to assign the relevant questions to the EMQ via the Advanced Options drop down menu.
Once you've done this you will see that the MCQ is 'wrapped' in a grey box containing the details of the EMQ. Additional MCQs added to the same EMQ will be wrapped in the same box
For more information on EMQ's refer to the below article
